It seems like not a day goes by without hearing about some new “wonder food” that is supposed to be good for virtually anything that ails you. But plenty of foods don’t get the publicity – despite the fact they do good things for you. Take the humble apple, a fruit that actually helps keep decay away.

October is National Apple Month. So we’d like to take this opportunity to highlight some of the great things an apple can do for your smile. It contains malic acid, a substance that helps eliminate plaque and even has whitening properties. Thanks to the fruit’s high fiber content, it works almost like a toothbrush to scrub your teeth. Chewing on an apple stimulates saliva production, which helps rinse away cavity-causing bacteria and other harmful substances.

If you’ve got kids, apples are a great healthy snack to have on hand. Leave the skin on, for the biggest benefit. It’s packed with fiber and nutrients.

Check out this short video for some fun facts you can share with your kids about this fabulous fruit. Did you know China grows more apples than any other country?
