It’s important to stay hydrated, especially during the hot summer months when you lose water by perspiring. Water is typically your best choice. However, be careful of flavored water. Some flavored waters contain high amounts of acidic ingredients that are bad for your smile when consumed too often.

As this video explains, drinks with a pH level of 5 or more are OK for teeth. Regular tap water generally has a pH level of between 6 and 8. Flavored waters, especially carbonated ones, have a pH level between 2 and 4. Over time, consuming these drinks weakens your tooth enamel, making you more prone to dental decay.

It’s best to choose plain water as your go-to drink and make flavored waters an occasional treat. You can also:

  • Consume flavored water with meals. The saliva produced when eating helps counteract the acidic beverage.
  • Use a straw to lessen direct contact with your teeth.
  • Ask us about fluoride treatment. It can strengthen your tooth enamel.
